Change filesystem on USB stick

2013/04/14

The usb stick is /dev/sda it has two partitions with fat file systems .

overwriting ( mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1 ) did not work.

unmount (if not done before) the partions of the pendrive

clean the partition table with  fdisk /dev/sda . (use m for help) , create a new partition , write it back to disk.

then run mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1

set the label    with    e2label /dev/sda1 usbStick

get the new guid      ls -laF /dev/disk/by-uuid   and change the guid in /etc/fstab if you mount the drive there.
