Read binary file for SharePoint upload with PowerShell

2011/09/25

I need to upload pictures to a library. That pictures exist as files in a directory. I was search for the dot.net streamreader, when I found that get-content can also read binaries:

$bytearray = get-content c:\temp\mypicture.jpg -encoding byte

The $bytearray can then be passed to a sharepoint upload.

The byte array has the same length as the file. See an example

PS C:\> $bin = get-content C:\PortableApps\Wagic0160\Res\graphics\ai_unlocked.png -Encoding byte

PS C:\> $bin.Length
31715

PS C:\> (get-item C:\PortableApps\Wagic0160\Res\graphics\ai_unlocked.png).length
31715
